What is an oral-dental infection?
Our mouth’s constant contact with bacteria and germs makes it highly vulnerable to contract oral and dental infections. This is why your oral surgeon and your personal dentist encourage you to practice regular and frequent home hygiene efforts like brushing and flossing! When you don’t, you are far more likely to contract an oral or dental infection. During a regular exam at our Fort Worth, TX, practice, we will help you achieve optimal health and a beautiful, stunning smile.
One of the most common infections we see is the development of a tooth abscess. A tooth abscess is formed by a bacterial infection within your mouth and causes a pocket of pus to develop around the infected tooth. Most of the time a tooth abscess is developed as a result of periodontal disease, tooth decay, or a broken tooth. Sometimes, a root canal therapy can help restore the infected tooth without an extraction. If the tooth cannot be restored with a root canal procedure, it must be removed. After the tooth is removed, your doctor will clean the area of extraction to ensure the infection has been cleared.
If the infection is severe, you may need additional treatment. Usually, this involves relieving the pus that has developed by placing a drain in the area of the abscess after the tooth has been removed. If the infection has spread to nearby teeth, your jaw, or other areas of your mouth, you may be put on antibiotics to prevent further spreading.
If you think you have an oral or dental infection, please contact our office. If you experience any extreme, continuous pain around your teeth or any swelling around your cheek, teeth, or gums, we encourage you to make an appointment for an immediate consultation.
