What is oral pathology?
Your mouth is a very important organ but is extremely susceptible to disorders and infection. One of the most common areas that will show infection is the special lining of your mouth, call mucosa, that is smooth and coral pink in color. If you notice a change in the appearance of the lining of your mouth or in its structures, such as the tongue or tonsils, this may be a sign of an oral pathology process. Dr. Green provides thorough examinations at his Fort Worth, TX, practice to help diagnose and treat the potential health concerns at its earliest stages.
If you experience any of the following symptoms on your lips, cheeks, palate, or gum tissue around the teeth, tongue, face and/or neck, you should contact your doctor:
- Reddish or whitish patches in the mouth
- A sore that fails to heal and bleeds easily
- Chronic sore throat or hoarseness
- Difficulty in chewing or swallowing
You may experience pain in these areas; however, pain does not always occur, making it important to regularly monitor your oral health. Your mouth is one of your body’s most important warning systems and is likely to let you know if there is a problem quickly.
Please schedule a consultation with our office if you suspect you may be experiencing a pathological process. Your doctor will examine your mouth and the surrounding areas thoroughly to detect the presence of infection or disease and develop a personalized treatment plan to restore your oral health.
Some common examples of oral pathological processes include:
- Strep throat
- Herpes simplex virus
- Salivary gland disease
- Oral ulceration
- Burning mouth syndrome
- Oral cancer
- Some autoimmune diseases
